MIDEAST STOCKS-Saudi stocks pull back, Egypt stalls
DUBAI, Aug 26 (Reuters) - Saudi Arabia's stock market pulled back in early trade on Wednesday as buying in blue chips petered out, while Egypt's market stalled. The Saudi index had surged 7.4 percent on Tuesday in the highest trading volume since May 2014, rebounding after losing 23 percent in the month of August. With global oil prices and equities still shaky, however, there was little follow-through buying on Wednesday morning and the index was down 1.7 percent in the opening minutes. Saudi Basic Industries, which had jumped its 10 percent daily limit on Tuesday, pulled back 1.6 percent. ...
European shares end down after Syngenta slumps
By Sudip Kar-Gupta and Alistair Smout LONDON (Reuters) - European shares ended nearly two percent lower on Wednesday after a volatile session, hit by a late drop in Syngenta after Monsanto dropped its offer for the company. Stocks remain highly sensitive to fears over Chinese growth which have wreaked havoc in markets for days, but benchmark indexes closed above session lows on an early Wall Street rally and hopes of monetary stimulus from the European Central Bank. Syngenta fell 18.2 percent after U.S. agribusiness leader Monsanto gave up trying to buy it.
Stock markets diverge, crude falls as China jitters persist
By Sinead Carew NEW YORK (Reuters) - Wall Street was sharply higher on Wednesday while European shares and commodities prices fell as investors balanced strong U.S. economic data and interest rate comments with fears about China's slowing economy. The benchmark S&P 500 was up 2.6 percent in afternoon trading, helped by stronger-than-expected data on durable goods orders and comments that appeared to make a September interest rate hike less likely. New York Fed President William Dudley said a rate hike next month seems less appropriate given the threat posed to the U.S. economy by recent global market turmoil.

The London stock market has suffered more volatility with £26bn wiped off the value of the FTSE 100 index of leading UK shares. But the United States had a better day, with the Dow Jones up 3.95% at 16,285 after big falls in the previous session. Recent falls have seen the FTSE 100 fall into "correction" territory - it is more than 10% off its all-time closing high of 7,104 in April.

The suspect, identified as Harrison Lee Wiley Jr., was captured about an hour after the violence began in the small town of Sunset, about 70 miles (112 km) west of the state capital, Baton Rouge, the St. Landry Parish Sheriff said. Wiley is accused of stabbing his wife and two other women in a "domestic disturbance," then fatally shooting the officer who was the first to arrive on the scene, Sheriff Bobby Guidroz told reporters. Wiley, described by responding officers as "highly intoxicated," then jumped into an automobile and drove about three blocks before crashing the vehicle into a JR Food Mart, the sheriff said.
Virginia TV journalists killed by suspect with 'powder keg' of anger
By Gary Robertson MONETA, Va. (Reuters) - Two television journalists were shot to death during a live broadcast in Virginia on Wednesday, slain by a former employee of the TV station and who called himself a "powder keg" of anger over what he saw as racial discrimination at work and elsewhere in the United States. The suspect, 41-year-old Vester Flanagan, shot himself as police pursued him on a Virginia highway hours after the shooting. Flanagan, who was African-American, died later at a hospital, police said.
