NASA Slammed a Probe Into a Comet 10 Years Ago Today
NASA Slammed a Probe Into a Comet 10 Years Ago TodayWhen you're watching the fireworks displays this Fourth of July, take a moment to reflect on some cosmic pyrotechnics that NASA pulled off a decade ago. On July 4, 2005, while zooming along millions of miles from Earth, NASA's Deep Impact spacecraft released an 820-lb. (370 kilograms) probe that smashed into Comet Tempel 1 at 23,000 mph (37,000 km/h), gouging out a crater about 500 feet (150 meters) wide. The Deep Impact mothership watched the powerful collision — which marked the first time a manmade object interacted with the surface of a comet — from a safe distance, studying the material blasted into space by the impactor.

Ebola Returns to Liberia: Where Did It Come From, and Could It Spread?
The return of Ebola in Liberia — with three new cases reported this week in the previously Ebola-free country — is worrisome, and raises questions about whether Liberia was really free of the disease to begin with, experts say. Liberian health officials reported the death of a 17-year-old boy from Ebola on Sunday, and two other cases of Ebola in people who were with the boy when he died, according to ABC News. The new cases are the first in Liberia since the country was declared free of the disease on May 9.

The solar-powered aircraft is currently partway through a planned journey around the world.
Colorful Arctic Animals Revealed in Thousands of Undersea Images
Colorful Arctic Animals Revealed in Thousands of Undersea ImagesNew photographs of fluorescent sea creatures — including bright orange animals that resemble feather dusters with long, skinny handles, and spongy, neon-pink anemones — on the Arctic seafloor could help researchers determine how much methane, a potent greenhouse gas, will make its way to the atmosphere and contribute to climate change. It's amazing," said Guiliana Panieri, a scientist on the photo-taking expedition and a professor in environment and climate at The Arctic University of Norway. The colorful sea creatures live near methane seeps, or cracks in the ocean floor that naturally release methane.

Tunisia declares state of emergency after beach attack

A Tunisian special force officer and a policeman patrol the beach as tourists take part in a ceremony on July 3, 2015, in memory of those killed the previous week by a jihadist gunman in the popular resort of Port el KantaouiPresident Beji Caid Essebsi on Saturday declared a state of emergency following last week's beach massacre claimed by jihadists that he said had left Tunisia facing a "special type of war". In a televised address to the nation, Essebsi said the state of emergency, effective from Saturday for a 30-day period, was decided on after consultations with the parliament speaker and prime minister. A state of emergency, granting special powers to the police and army, was in force for three years up until March 2014, following longtime secular president Zine El Abidine Ben Ali's ouster in a 2011 revolution.

America celebrates July 4 with hot dogs and barbecues amid tightened security

People watch the Macy's 4th of July Fireworks for Independence Day eplode over the East River from the rooftop of their car from the Pulaski Bridge in New YorkAmericans marched in star-spangled parades, ran relay races, gathered for fireworks shows and crowned a new world hot dog eating champion as they celebrated Independence Day in traditional style on Saturday. Possible security threats, wildfires in the West and rainy weather on the East Coast apparently did little to dampen the spirits of celebrants decked out in red, white and blue from their headbands to their shoelaces. Crowds at Boston's Old State House erupted in applause and cannons shot out tri-color confetti after the annual July Fourth reading of the Declaration of Independence.

Leaping sturgeon kills five-year-old girl boating in Florida
Jaylon Rippy was boating with her family on the Suwannee River in northwest Florida near Fanning Springs on Thursday evening when the jumping fish injured the young girl along with her mother and her 9-year-old brother, the state Fish and Wildlife Commission said in a statement. The family members, who were from nearby Trenton, were airlifted to a hospital in Gainesville but the girl did not survive. On Friday, two adults traveling in a boat on the Santa Fe River between the Suwannee River and a Branford area campground were also struck by a leaping sturgeon, Fish and Wildlife Commission officials said in a statement.
